Leukemia and Lymphoma Society - Team in Training- Tennessee Chapter

Dear Friends, Family, Neighbors, and Associates,

On April 26,2003, I will be running in the Country Music Marathon as a member of the Leukemia Society’s “Team in Training.” Team in Training serves two purposes: The first is to use a marathon to parallel the physical and emotional challenges encountered by those with leukemia, the second is to raise money for continued research and patient aid. The volunteers on the team all share a common goal of raising $1,600 each for the Leukemia Society.

One of my personal goals in life is to complete a marathon. I felt raising money for the Leukemia Society while training for the marathon would be the best way for me to achieve my personal goal while giving to those in need. I am also a dietitian at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital where I am involved in the care of many children who suffer from leukemia and lymphoma. I have been able to see first hand what these children struggle with on a day to day basis. After seeing their daily struggles, I believe that completing a marathon is a small accomplishment compared to their everyday fight.

I have been introduced to Logan Duley, who will be my patient hero, in whose honor I am completing this marathon. Logan, an active three year old, was diagnosed in July of this year with Acute Lymphoid Leukemia. Logan is currently receiving chemotherapy and will continue to do so for 38 months. I wear a bracelet with Logan’s name on it. It is a constant reminder of why I am running this race. The struggle of completing the marathon is symbolic of the challenge the
Leukemia/lymphoma patient faces every day.

I am writing to ask you for your support in this effort to bring a cure for leukemia
closer to a reality for all patients and families. We cannot complete our mission without
your help. I am asking for your help in one or more of the following ways:

1. Your tax-deductible contribution made out to: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
and returned by February 14, 2003 in the enclosed self-addressed envelope or directly to: “Team in Training (TNT),c/o Kella Arwood, 3318 Lakebrook Blvd, Knoxville, TN 37909. Payments are accepted by cash, check, or credit cards (form attached). At least 75% of your contribution will go directly too much needed research and patient assistance programs.

2. Please feel free to share this letter with others who might be interested in supporting this fund raising effort.

3. Please pray for the 100,000 Americans who get leukemia or one of its related diseases each year, an estimated 59,000 of these people will not survive. Twenty-five years ago, only 5% of children diagnosed with leukemia survived. Today, thanks to research funded by the Leukemia Society and other fine organizations, the survival rate for children has risen to 80%. This research is working, but the job is far from finished. It is for those 59,000 people with leukemia, this research must continue.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you very much for your support and generosity. Every gift, regardless of its size, will bring hope to families touched by leukemia.

With warmest wishes,

Kella Arwood
